Does a VAC ban mean someone is a scammer?

VAC bans are among the most visible marks on a Steam profile, and one of the most misunderstood.

What a VAC ban is

Valve Anti-Cheat bans accounts that it detects using cheats in protected games. The ban is permanent and shown on the profile. Game bans are issued by individual games and are separate.

VAC is not a scam flag

Cheating and scamming are different offences. Plenty of cheaters never scam anyone, and plenty of scammers have clean records. A VAC ban tells you the owner was willing to break rules to gain an advantage, which is relevant to trust but not decisive.

Why age of the ban matters

Steam reports how many days ago the last ban was issued. A decade-old ban on an otherwise long-standing, well-regarded account tells a different story than a ban last month on a new account. TradeProof scores a single old VAC ban far more leniently than a recent one, and treats multiple VAC bans as a serious problem.

Practical advice

Look at the whole picture: age, trade restrictions, reports and behaviour. Use a VAC ban as one input, not a verdict.
