SteamRep alternative: what to use now that it has closed

For well over a decade, “check them on SteamRep” was the standard advice before a Steam trade. That site is gone. This page explains what happened and how to keep checking traders.

What happened to SteamRep

SteamRep announced in 2024 that it would shut down. Its forums and reports closed, its website stayed up until the end of 2024, and its API and plugins were retired afterwards. Today steamrep.com shows a “SteamRep Sunset” notice and says sites that reference the service no longer work.

Before closing, SteamRep offered communities a CSV archive of its BANNED and CAUTION tags. Private notes and evidence were not kept. That archive is the main surviving record of long-running scam tagging.

What you can use instead

ToolWhat it checksNotes
TradeProofTrust score from Steam data, bans, community reports and the archived SteamRep BANNED/CAUTION listFree; browser extension and API in development
SIHRepReputation for skin traders based on reviews and trade history from its own usersAimed at CS2/Dota skin trading

No single tool sees everything. Use more than one for valuable trades, and treat a clean result as “no known problems”, never as a guarantee.

What TradeProof does

  • Checks account age, level, library, profile quality and VAC, game and trade bans from Steam’s public API.
  • Imports the archived SteamRep BANNED and CAUTION lists, so a long-ago tag still shows.
  • Collects new community reports and counts a report only once it is reviewed.
  • Publishes the full scoring rules on the methodology page, so a score is never a black box.
  • Accepts any ID format: profile link, SteamID64, STEAM_0, [U:1:x] or a vanity name.

Common questions

Is TradeProof the same as SteamRep?

No. TradeProof is an independent project, not affiliated with SteamRep or Valve. It uses the archive SteamRep released and adds its own data and reports.

Can I still check if someone was tagged by SteamRep?

Yes, for the 2024 archive. Paste the profile on the home page and look for the SteamRep listing in the result.

Is the archive still accurate?

It is a snapshot, so it cannot show tags added after the export, and accounts sometimes change hands. If an entry is wrong, see our dispute policy.
